From Classroom Concepts to Real-World Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering, Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology (VJIT), Hyderabad, organized an enriching Industrial Visit to the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM), Hyderabad, on 8th September 2026, in association with the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) Student Chapter.
The visit provided II Year Civil Engineering students with valuable practical exposure to the cement and concrete industry, manufacturing processes, material testing, quality control, and advanced laboratory practices. It enabled students to gain firsthand knowledge of how fundamental concepts learned in the classroom are applied in real-world engineering and construction practices.
Interaction with Industry Experts
Dr. Pandu Ranga Rao Badarla, Director, NCCBM, interacted with the students and shared valuable insights into the cement and construction industry. He discussed various aspects including career opportunities in Civil Engineering, cement manufacturing processes, relevant codes and standards, NCCBM’s contribution to industry and government projects, and opportunities for higher education and professional growth.
The interaction provided students with valuable perspectives on emerging opportunities and the evolving requirements of the civil engineering profession.
Practical Laboratory Exposure
The laboratory sessions were a major highlight of the visit. Students witnessed practical demonstrations related to cement chemistry, concrete technology, and fresh and hardened concrete testing.
The key demonstrations included:
- Particle Size Analysis
- Chemical Analysis of Cement
- Blaine’s Fineness and Standard Consistency
- Slump Test, V-Funnel Test and L-Box Test
- Accelerated Curing
- Compressive Strength and Split Tensile Strength Tests
- Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) Testing
These demonstrations helped students develop a deeper understanding of material properties, testing procedures, quality assessment, and concrete performance, while strengthening the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical engineering applications.
Enhancing Industry-Oriented Learning
The industrial visit offered students an opportunity to explore the science and technology behind cement and concrete materials that form the foundation of modern infrastructure. The experience enhanced their technical knowledge, practical awareness, and understanding of quality control and testing practices followed in the construction materials industry.
