Build Your Own Satellite & Ground Station
The CubeSat Workshop 2026 brought together aspiring engineers for an immersive three-day journey into satellite technology and space systems. Organized by the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, VJIT, in association with the IEEE AP-S Student Chapter and COSMOS Club, the workshop emphasized experiential learning through real-world CubeSat development, embedded systems, telemetry, and ground station communication.

The workshop was privileged to welcome Dr. G. Venkata Narayana, Former Deputy Project Director, GSLV Mk-III Project, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO, as the Chief Guest.
His inspiring address on India’s space missions, satellite engineering, and emerging opportunities in the space sector motivated students to pursue innovation, research, and advanced technological development. Drawing from his vast experience at ISRO, he encouraged participants to dream beyond conventional engineering and contribute to India’s growing space ecosystem.

Inaugural Session
The inaugural ceremony marked the beginning of an exciting learning journey with insightful keynote sessions delivered by renowned experts. Participants gained valuable perspectives on satellite missions, CubeSat technology, emerging space innovations, and the rapidly expanding opportunities within India’s space ecosystem.
Expert Interaction and Knowledge Sharing
Beyond the classroom sessions, students actively interacted with experts, exchanging ideas and gaining first-hand insights into satellite development, space research, and engineering innovation. These meaningful interactions inspired participants to explore higher education, research, entrepreneurship, and careers in the rapidly evolving space industry.
Inspiring Keynote Address
The keynote lecture by Dr. G. Venkata Narayana successfully bridged theoretical concepts with practical experiences from India’s prestigious space missions. His real-world insights into launch vehicles, satellite systems, and mission planning provided students with a deeper understanding of modern space engineering and inspired them to pursue excellence in the field.
Hands-on CubeSat Development
More than 355 students worked collaboratively to assemble, program, and integrate CubeSat prototypes during intensive hands-on technical sessions. The workshop transformed theoretical knowledge into practical engineering skills through project-based learning, teamwork, and guided experimentation.
Participants designed and assembled functional CubeSat prototypes incorporating communication modules, telemetry units, sensors, and embedded controllers. This comprehensive hands-on experience enabled students to understand modern small satellite architecture, subsystem integration, and system-level engineering.
Ground Station Communication
Students successfully established communication between the CubeSat prototypes and the Ground Station, enabling real-time telemetry reception, monitoring, and data acquisition. They programmed onboard controllers and validated live telemetry transmission through custom-developed Ground Station interfaces, demonstrating the seamless integration of embedded systems, wireless communication, and mission control technologies.
High-Altitude Balloon Launch
One of the major highlights of the workshop was the successful launch of the CubeSat prototype using a high-altitude balloon. Throughout the flight, participants monitored real-time telemetry transmission, simulating key aspects of an actual satellite deployment mission. This practical demonstration provided valuable exposure to flight testing, telemetry analysis, and mission operations.
Live Drone-Based Mission Demonstration
The workshop concluded with an exciting live drone-based CubeSat launch demonstration, showcasing the successful integration of flight systems, wireless telemetry, and Ground Station communication. The demonstration allowed participants to experience the complete lifecycle of a CubeSat mission—from design and development to launch, tracking, and real-time monitoring.
Workshop Outcome
CubeSat Workshop 2026 successfully transformed classroom concepts into practical space engineering experiences by providing participants with comprehensive exposure to CubeSat design, embedded systems, telemetry, Ground Station communication, and live launch demonstrations using high-altitude balloons and drones.
The workshop empowered 355 aspiring engineers with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to explore future opportunities in satellite technology, research, innovation, and the rapidly growing aerospace industry.
