Empowering Rural Women: VJIT Women’s Empowerment Cell and NSS Collaborate with Aziznagar Village Leadership

On 12th April 2021, the Women’s Empowerment Cell (WEC) and NSS Unit of VJIT engaged in a meaningful dialogue with the Sarpanch and Village Officer of Aziznagar to explore ways of supporting and empowering women in the rural community. This initiative was rooted in the findings of a field survey conducted on 9th April 2021, which shed light on the socio-economic challenges faced by women in the village.

The survey revealed that women in Aziznagar continue to face significant social and cultural barriers in a predominantly male-dominated society. Many women have limited access to education and employment opportunities and face restrictions on their ability to act independently. Their roles remain largely confined to household responsibilities and minor farm-related tasks, despite their significant contributions.

One of the key concerns discussed was the persistent link between poverty and women’s lack of control over resources and decision-making. The discussions brought attention to the ways in which women’s economic participation is often discouraged—both explicitly and implicitly—by household norms. Although women contribute substantially as both laborers and mentors within the family, their efforts are frequently undervalued and overlooked.

Recognizing these issues, the VJIT Women’s Empowerment Cell emphasized the need for structured intervention programs aimed at creating awareness and enabling sustainable development for rural women. The team proposed the implementation of income generation and skill development programs tailored to the local context. These programs would focus on equipping women with the skills needed to start their own businesses or secure employment, thereby promoting financial independence.

The VJIT team conveyed to the Sarpanch that financial independence not only reduces women’s dependency on male family members but also enhances their ability to make personal and familial decisions. Empowered women are better positioned to contribute meaningfully to household affairs and foster a supportive environment that encourages gender equality within the community.

This interaction marks a significant step in VJIT’s ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between academic institutions and rural communities. The Women’s Empowerment Cell and NSS Unit aim to continue their support through actionable programs that uplift and empower rural women, enabling them to lead with confidence and dignity.
