The Department of Civil Engineering, VJIT, in its commitment to inspire and support aspiring women engineers, organized a seminar titled “Women and Construction Career” on 28th September 2019 at the E-Block Seminar Hall. The event was conducted under the aegis of the Women Empowerment Cell, with the objective of highlighting the growing role of women in the construction and infrastructure sectors.
The seminar featured Er. P. Srinivas Reddy as the Chief Guest, who shared valuable insights on the evolving landscape of the construction industry and the emerging opportunities for women in this field. He emphasized the significant rise in the participation of women in construction-related careers in recent years, noting that this shift has been largely driven by technological advancements and digitization of construction processes, which have created more office-based, IT-enabled technical roles.
In his address, Mr. Reddy highlighted that the construction industry is now accommodating women in three major roles:
- Technical positions such as civil engineers and architects
- Administrative positions including finance, human resources, and project management
- On-site roles involving manual labor, which, though limited, are gradually increasing
He acknowledged that women in administrative and technical roles are especially benefitting from flexible work environments, as these positions often do not require extensive field travel, making them more accessible and inclusive.
The seminar also drew attention to the increasing number of female students enrolling in Civil Engineering and Construction Management programs, signaling a promising shift toward gender diversity in the construction sector.
This initiative by the Civil Engineering Department and the Women Empowerment Cell reaffirms VJIT’s dedication to encouraging women to explore and excel in non-traditional and emerging career paths, fostering an environment where equal opportunity and professional growth are championed across all disciplines.
