The Department of MBA at Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology organized an enriching industrial visit for MBA I Year B Section students to the Akshaya Patra Foundation, Kokapeta, Hyderabad, on 27th June 2024. This visit aimed to blend theoretical knowledge with practical exposure, enhancing students’ understanding of real-world management practices. Due to space constraints, students were divided into two batches and taken on different days.
Session Highlights:
The session commenced with an insightful talk by Mr. Rakesh Mishra, the resource person from Akshaya Patra. He addressed the students on the causes of stress and effective strategies to overcome it. This was followed by a peaceful mantra chanting session and guided meditation, promoting mindfulness and well-being among the students.
About Akshaya Patra Foundation:
Akshaya Patra is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Bengaluru, India. It operates under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and Anganwadi schemes, providing free meals to school children across Hyderabad. Additionally, it offers a highly affordable meal option at just Rs. 5. The foundation strives to eliminate classroom hunger, counter malnutrition, and support the right to education for socio-economically disadvantaged children.
Historical Significance of the Name:
The name “Akshaya Patra” has its roots in Indian mythology. During the Pandavas’ exile, Draupadi faced difficulties in providing hospitality to their numerous guests. She prayed to Lord Krishna, who blessed her with the Akshaya Patra—an inexhaustible vessel that provided unlimited food daily until Draupadi herself finished eating. This symbolizes the foundation’s mission to ensure no one goes hungry.
Industrial Tour:
Students explored various departments, including Accounts, Quality Control, Purchasing & Production, Waste Disposal, and Logistics. They gained firsthand knowledge of the procedures, processes, and management practices in each department. The visit also included a tour of the kitchen where mid-day meals are prepared. Unlike other automated kitchens of Akshaya Patra, this facility operates on a single floor with significant manual involvement. Key observations included:
- Large-Scale Cooking Machinery: Vessels with capacities of 1300 liters (for rice) and 2600 liters (for sambar) were used.
- Hygiene Practices: Strict cleanliness and maintenance protocols, quality checks, and labeling processes before food dispatch.
- Menu Planning: Emphasis on nutritional value and variety in daily meals.
The students actively engaged in observing the operations, interacting with staff, and participating in discussions about the organization’s workflow. They were particularly inspired by a motivational quote from Srila Prabhupada displayed at the entrance, setting the tone for the visit.
Objectives of the Visit:
- To provide insights into the operational framework of Akshaya Patra.
- To understand the technological challenges faced by the food industry.
- To enhance knowledge of management practices in large-scale organizations.
Key Outcomes:
- Students gained a comprehensive understanding of Akshaya Patra’s operations.
- Awareness of technological and logistical challenges in the food industry.
- Insight into internal management practices and career opportunities at Akshaya Patra.
- Initiation of industrial visit culture within the MBA department.
The visit concluded with a delicious lunch served at the foundation, allowing students to experience the very meals prepared during their tour. This industrial visit not only broadened their academic perspective but also instilled a sense of social responsibility and awareness of community-driven initiatives.
