Introduction
As part of the academic curriculum, the III Year II Semester students of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department visited the Kakatiya Thermal Power Project (KTPP), Chelpur, Jayashankar Bhupalapally District, Telangana, on 9th May 2025. This visit aimed to provide practical exposure to thermal power generation under the guidance of our faculty members.
About the Industry
KTPP is a key coal-based power plant operated by Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO). It plays a vital role in fulfilling the power needs of Telangana and nearby areas. The plant comprises:
- Stage-I: 1 × 500 MW (Commissioned)
- Stage-II: 1 × 600 MW (Commissioned)
The facility utilizes coal as its primary fuel and is equipped with high-efficiency systems, pollution control technology, and modern monitoring infrastructure.
Objectives of the Visit
- Understand electricity generation via thermal energy.
- Observe the functioning of boilers, turbines, generators, and cooling units.
- Learn about coal and ash handling, and pollution control systems.
- Relate theoretical concepts with practical implementations.
Details of the Visit
- Date: 09/05/2025
- Venue: Kakatiya Thermal Power Project, Chelpur
- Participants: III Year II Sem EEE students
- Faculty Coordinators:
- Mr. D. Srinivas, Associate Professor
- Mrs. V. Vijaya Lakshmi, Associate Professor
- Mr. L. Raju, Assistant Professor
We were warmly welcomed by KTPP staff and given an orientation session. Students were then split into groups and guided through the plant by technical personnel.
Key Learnings
- Power generation follows the Rankine Cycle.
- Witnessed the process of coal combustion to turbine rotation.
- Understood the functioning of boilers, turbines, and generators.
- Learned about SCADA systems and centralized plant control rooms.
- Gained insights into environmental safeguards like ESP, FGD, and ash management.
Conclusion
The visit to KTPP was highly informative and aligned theoretical knowledge with practical insights into thermal power plant operations. It significantly enriched our understanding of large-scale power generation systems.
Acknowledgment
We sincerely thank:
- The management of KTPP for their guidance and hospitality.
