Organized by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, VJIT
Date: 17th March 2025

The students of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology had the opportunity to undertake an enriching industrial visit to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, on 17th March 2025. The visit offered valuable insights into the applications of geo-spatial technology and ocean data analytics, highlighting their real-world relevance.

About INCOIS

INCOIS is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and functions as a unit of the Earth System Science Organization (ESSO). It is mandated to deliver reliable and timely ocean information and advisory services to the public, industry stakeholders, government bodies, and the scientific community. Its work is grounded in continuous ocean observations and focused research.

Learning Highlights from the Visit

  • Exposure to Geo-Spatial and Ocean Data Applications
Students explored real-time ocean data and its practical implications in areas such as weather forecasting, disaster management, navigation, and map generation.
  • Daily Advisories for Fishermen
Officials explained how INCOIS provides daily advisories to fishermen, helping them identify zones of abundant fish. This not only improves catch rates but also conserves fuel and time.
  • Ocean Observing Systems
Students were introduced to INCOIS’s suite of Ocean Observing Systems deployed in the Indian Ocean. These systems collect crucial data on various ocean parameters to enhance scientific understanding and prediction capabilities.
  • High-Performance Computing & Data Communication
The visit included a demonstration of the high-performance computing infrastructure and robust data communication networks maintained at INCOIS. These systems support real-time ocean state forecast models and ensure 100% redundancy and reliability.

Conclusion

The industrial visit to INCOIS provided students with a unique opportunity to witness how advanced technologies and scientific research intersect to address environmental and societal challenges. It served as a powerful example of how Computer Science and Engineering principles are applied beyond traditional domains, inspiring students to think broadly about their career paths and research interests.
