21 Feb 2026 & 28th Feb 2026

 Introduction

As part of our academic curriculum and to gain practical exposure to the generation of electrical power, the III Year IISemester students of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department, visited Kakatiya Thermal Power Project (KTPP) located at Chelpur, Jayashankar Bhupalapally District, Telangana State on 28th Feb 2026. And II Year II Semester students of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department, visited KTPP on21 Feb 2026.

This industrial visit was organized under the guidance of faculty members with the aim of enhancing students’ understanding of thermal power generation processes and the operation of a large-scale power plant.

About the Industry

Kakatiya Thermal Power Project is a major coal-based power plant operated by the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO). The plant plays a crucial role in meeting the electricity demands of Telangana and surrounding regions. It consists of:

– Stage-I: 1 × 500 MW unit (Commissioned)

– Stage-II: 1 × 600 MW unit (Commissioned)

The plant uses coal as its primary fuel and operates with high thermal efficiency, modern pollution control systems, and advanced monitoring technology.

 Objectives of the Visit

-To understand the generation of electricity using thermal energy.

-To observe the operation of boilers, turbines, generators, and cooling systems.

-To learn about coal handling, ash handling, and pollution control systems.

– To correlate theoretical concepts studied in class with practical applications.

Details of visit:

Date: 28/02/2026

Place: Kakatiya Thermal Power Project, Chelpur

Participants: III Year II Sem EEE students

Faculty Coordinators: Mr. A.Mohandas, Assistant Professor

Mrs. V.Vijaya Lakshmi, Associate Professor

Mr. L.Raju, Assistant Professor

After a brief orientation session, students were divided into groups and guided by technical staff for a detailed plant tour.

-The plant follows the Rankine Cycle for power generation.

-Observed the complete process of coal combustion, steam generation, and turbine rotation.

-Gained insight into boiler operation, turbine efficiency, and generator working.

-Understood the importance of control rooms and SCADA systems for plant monitoring.

-Learned about environmental measures like ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator), FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization), and ash management systems.

The industrial visit to Kakatiya Thermal Power Project was an enriching and informative experience. It provided us with valuable insights into the functioning of a large-scale thermal power station and enhanced our practical knowledge, complementing our academic studies.
