The Women Empowerment Cell of Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology, in collaboration with the NSS Unit and the Department of Civil Engineering, organized an enlightening seminar on “Impact of Women Empowerment on Women in Poverty” on July 18, 2018. Held at the C-Block Seminar Hall, the event was attended by over 150 students and faculty members, with a special focus on engaging girl students and women faculty.

The session was graced by Mrs. S.P. Anchuri, Vice President of the Indian Association of Structural Engineers, Hyderabad, who served as the chief guest and keynote speaker. In her address, Mrs. Anchuri emphasized the vital role of women empowerment, particularly in addressing poverty and inequality in developing countries like India.

She highlighted that true empowerment enables women to become self-reliant, economically productive, and capable of making independent decisions concerning their education, health, and personal well-being. The speaker reiterated that gender equality is not just a social ideal but a practical necessity for national development.

The seminar shed light on the existing disparities between men and women in areas such as education, employment, income, health, personal safety, and political representation. Although India has shown progress in several key indicators—such as improved literacy rates, better sex ratio at birth, and reduced maternal mortality rates—many challenges still persist. The lack of decision-making power and continued dependence on male family members in critical matters continue to hinder women’s advancement.

The session also brought attention to the role of societal change in empowering women. Participants were encouraged to view women not just as beneficiaries but as active contributors to social and economic development. The discussion extended to women’s empowerment and livelihood enhancement in the Mid-Gangetic Plains, emphasizing the need to address legal, political, and health-related challenges faced by women in impoverished communities.

The seminar received highly positive feedback from attendees, many of whom expressed a deeper understanding of the intersection between women empowerment and poverty reduction. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, reinforcing VJIT’s ongoing commitment to fostering awareness and action through meaningful dialogue and engagement.
