The Department of Civil Engineering, Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology organized an industrial visit to CSIR–National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad on 26th September 2024, as part of CSIR-NGRI Open Day.

The visit included second- and third-year UG students, who had a valuable opportunity to gain insight into cutting-edge research in geophysics and its practical applications. The visit was designed to bridge academic concepts with real-world scientific research and technologies.

During the visit:

  • Mr. Vivekananda Pande, Senior Scientist, provided an in-depth session on Geodesy and Earth Measurements, explaining the study of the gravity field, mean sea level surfaces, and earth dynamics beneath continental masses.
  • Mr. Laxmi Narayana, Research Scholar, gave a detailed presentation on Seismology, covering earthquake dynamics, seismic risk assessment, and methods used to predict earthquake intensity based on tectonic data and historical seismicity.
  • Mr. Nihar Ranjankar, Senior Scientist, delivered insights into Geothermal Research, explaining internal heat studies, energy potential, and how geothermal energy serves as a resource for heating, cooling, power, and mineral extraction.

The event also featured live demonstrations and interactive exhibits, including:

  • Seismic sensor technology
  • Subsurface geophysical survey techniques
  • Environmental monitoring tools
  • Lectures on advancements in remote sensing and geophysical data analysis

Students actively interacted with scientists and research scholars, gaining exposure to career opportunities in geophysics and the broader scope of natural hazard management and resource exploration.

This enriching experience inspired students to further explore interdisciplinary applications of civil engineering in geosciences and environmental studies.
